The challenge: Women are more likely to give—but less likely to receive philanthropic funding
Research from Indiana University’s Women’s Philanthropy Institute shows that historically women across income levels and generations are more likely than men to give, yet the 47,449 organizations dedicated to women and girls in the US received only 1.9% of charitable giving in 2018.
According to the Philanthropic Initiative for Racial Equity, “women of color across the country are leading justice movements that bring positive lasting impact for all in our communities.”
Yet in 2017 grantmaking to women and girls of color totaled about 0.5% ($356 million) of the $66.9 billion given by foundations, equating to $5.48 per woman or girl of color in the US (Pocket Change: How Women and Girls of Color Do More With Less).
The opportunity: #GiveWomen our support to help close this gender funding gap
Our annual GiveWomen guide features grassroots and small organizations led by and focused on self-identified women and/or gender-expansive people.
Now available, the 2021 GiveWomen guide is a great place to start your year-end giving.
